MINDSET PLUS ACTION EQUALS SELF-ACTUALIZATION
All my wins are lessons and all my failures are lessons that will one day become wins. – Tiffany Haddish
With the right mindset, you are capable of continuing to do the impossible. After all, look how far you have come. The power you have over your own actions is dictated entirely by, how you think about your choices and the way you react to events in life, as they arise. Consider mindset as the key factor in everything that happens next.
The future becomes abundantly clear when you take full control of what you do, how you think about yourself, and why you choose to move forward knowing that you can do anything.
There are no overnight successes in this world and everything worth doing takes effort. You are in the driver's seat when it comes to the way you perceive yourself in the world from the way you talk to yourself, to the way that you feel about yourself, the reactions that you have, are all choice-based. You have a choice to be kind to yourself or not. You have a choice to live your life on your terms or vicariously through others, MAKE A CHOICE.
The power of your mindset starts with interrupting negative thoughts, patterns, which you discovered earlier in the chapter, the interruption process. You have read the six principles of healing trauma; which Think Unbroken is based on putting those into practice is a challenge in itself and that is where your mindset comes into play. If you want to be successful in your healing journey, then the first thing that you have to do is tell yourself that you will be successful. You must become your own champion; no one is coming to save you. It is only you who will be able to step up to the plate when the game is on the line, it's your turn at-bat. If you asked any sports psychologist, the number one reason that superstar athletes become champions and stay winners, they will all say it's a mindset that sets them apart.
You have the same opportunity to be a superstar in your life by simply changing the way that you think about yourself in the moments moving forward. The odds of you even being born are one in four trillion when you break it down to pure numbers and nothing else. We are all on the same playing field, it's what we believe and feels that we are capable of doing in the game that counts. The adjustment in your mindset is going to come together in pieces, it's very unlikely that in just a day week, or month you will suddenly be a different person with a different perception of yourself.
I have a theory and it's unproven, but I believe it takes as long if not longer to become healthy and sustainable as it did to become interrupted from trauma and abuse. However, to contradict my own statement I also believe that with the right mindset time becomes relevant. Your mindset is the foundation for everything that you build moving forward and the past, your foundation was built on a volcano.
Today, you have the opportunity to stack brick by brick until a new foundation is built on solid ground. Each day you take a brick place, it next to another and slowly rebuild.
Here are some simple mindset practices that you can implement into your life;
My favorite daily mindset practice is to recite my personal mantra multiple times throughout the day. My mantra is a compass, that keeps me headed in the right direction even on my darkest days.
This is my Mantra. I am happy healthy and strong, I believe that I have the ability to do anything in life because I have survived the darkness, the light within me will guide me to the future that I want because I deserve to have peace, love, and compassion for myself.
I have crafted and re-crafted my mantra over the years. You can see that my Mantra is positive and affirming language. If it's true that we become the stories that we tell ourselves that I know, I have to tell myself a positive and uplifting story. I've already told myself how awful and unwanted I am, which got me stuck in the vortex. I also believe in my Mantra I'll be honest initially I didn't but through years of daily practice and speaking and writing those words, they have become true for me. My Mantra is about an interruption in my heart and soul I believe that I deserve every word of that Mantra. The mindset you take in your future will become your compass.
It will take time to find true North, you will need to exercise, extreme patients, unbridled belief in your power, and trust in the fact that you will get to where you want to be. This is a marathon, not a sprint, killing demands that you stay the course, and if you do, the reward is the rest of your life.
The reality is, you get zero points for intentions. – Terry Crews
Action requires that you put the principles that you have discovered in this book into practice.
Action means that, when you step up to the plate, you swing for the fences.
Action means that when you are in round 5 of the championship fight and are down, you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to win.
There are going to be very hard times ahead and unfortunately, that's just the way it is. There will be days that you don't want to meditate, go to therapy, go to the gym, read, be around people, work or show up for yourself. I get it. Those hard days, are the days that you must step up for yourself. It is on those days that you do not give up on yourself.
For years being let down has been a part of your identity and you owe it to yourself to become the person, you know, you are capable of being.
Each day is about simple actions and movements that will lead to building a new foundation and structure for your life. If you don't lay a brick, then you cannot rebuild your foundation like you, I didn't sign up to be a brick mason, but there are really only two options; stay in the vortex or honor yourself by doing the hard work.
The actions that you take and the choices that you make will dictate your future. When you step up for yourself, you will have the life that you want. You know, that the world and the people in it, have let you down and hurt you again and again. We can agree on that and we can agree that it's totally fucking unfair that you even have to read a book like this. That's just the hand that you were dealt and you can't do anything about the past. To continue to live in dread and self-loathing or to continue down a path of self-destruction is a choice that you get to make. You can choose that path or you can choose self-actualization and show the fuck up for yourself.
What do you think it would feel like if one day, you felt the person that you always wanted to be? Would you feel happy excited, joyful, hopeful, or accomplished?
Close your eyes for a moment and allow yourself the space to think about what the future outside of the vortex and in full control of your life would feel like. If mindset plus action, equals self-actualization by simply taking steps every day, you will get to where you want to go.
The compass you use to navigate life comes intuitively, and is embedded in you, the only thing that you have to do is to follow it.
The beginning of your journey, may feel like an insurmountable mission, but it's not as each day passes the fog on the path ahead will begin to clear and what will emerge is the very thing that you have been looking for. It may take years for the fog to lift, which is why you must stay the course, not only because you owe it to yourself but because the next brick you lay could be the one that changes everything.
BECOMING UNBROKEN, THE POWER OF MANTRA
The power of a mantra can keep you grounded and focused when you feel shaky and need grounding. Tapping into your strength multiple times a day, may be necessary as you step further into your journey. Crafting a mantra is about leveraging your words when you need power.
And this exercise, write your Mantra and use it every day to remind yourself, how truly incredible you are, use only positive and affirming words. You deserve that for yourself. So much of this exercise is another intrinsic look about understanding the power that we have.
Here's the reality…
Now, one of the interesting things that I don't think that has talked about enough in personal growth or self-help is the fact that you have to make yourself believe that.
You have to end in date yourself with the understanding that you are a powerful person and in the beginning, it may not feel like that as true, because this is new and it's a narrative that you've never explored before, it's often very shaky ground but in time as you step into it more and more it will become true that is your reality.
As you affirm, as you create this identity slowly, it will start to become your normal and in that you have power in this mantra not only for creating power but it's there to pick you up as a reminder in those times that you're not showing up for yourself, that you're not doing the work or that you just feel stuck. Because the truth about this is even after all these years of work sometimes I still feel stuck but in those moments, I go to that Mantra, I go to my power, I go through all these exercises and Think Unbroken to leverage that strength to continue to move forward.
So take a few minutes. Create your Mantra and use that as your next tool.
