In this episode, I am excited to bring on Dr. Anna Lembke, one of the leading researchers and scientists on addiction on planet earth. She is a professor of psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine and Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic. She specializes in helping and treating people with addiction.
Many of us have battled addictions since we were young.
I know that I have, and you've heard me talk about that before.
I got high for the first time when I was 12 and drunk when I was 13, and by the time that I was 15 years old, I was expelled from school for selling drugs and have battled other addictions in my life; money, sex, workaholism, you name it, right? I think that holds true for, unfortunately, more people than I think even, I would care to admit, especially those of us who are trauma survivors and the truth that I know about the reality of our lives, is that on the backside of stepping through doing the work healing, ultimately changing the narrative shifting who we believe that we are operating through kindness and showing up every day, we can have a different experience.
Our conversation is incredible; I found out about her initially a few years ago or might have been last year. She was a guest on the Rich Rolls podcast, talking about addiction, and then I saw her on Tom Bilyeu's podcast on Impact Theory. I reached out to her because I knew that (A) there's a direct correlation between childhood trauma and addiction, and (B) that a lot of people listening to this show and I include myself in this, especially today as in this interview and being the host as someone who wants to learn and understand and know more about how to navigate addiction in the world not only my personal life but understanding the impact of it, the ramifications of it, how to move through it and ultimately how to take my life back.
So, bringing Anna on is an absolute honor and a pleasure.
She has a book that I highly recommend reading called Dopamine Nation. If you are addicted to your phone, to sex, to listen to this podcast, to go into the gym like, I don't care what it is. If you're in this place where you're like – this behavior that I have is negatively impacting my life, you've got to not only listen to this episode, but you must read her book Dopamine Nation; it's absolutely incredible!
So it's my honor, my pleasure, and without further, I do.
